The Way of the Bull

My favorite book about travel is The Way of the Bull by Leo Buscaglia.  When  this positive, open-minded, gentle people-person travels, he learns about other cultures and countries by really getting to know one person in each place he visits.  One of the best Christmas stories you will ever read is titled “Bali: Ratab”; it’s Chapter 7 of twelve introducing us to people, concepts and insights in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Saigon, Bali, Ceylon, India, Kashmir and Nepal.  Buscaglia says that the title “was suggested by a Zen book, 10 Bulls, written in the 12th century by the Chinese Zen master, Kakuan.  In his story the bull represented life energy, truth and action.  The WAY concerned the steps which man might take in process of seeking insight, finding himself, discovering his true nature.”  Buscaglia’s travels helped him learn more about himself while he made friends in new places.  It truly is a delight!

I’ve posted more interesting concepts about travel in the expanded “Travel Quotes” drop-down at the top of the blog site.  A favorite for me is by Mark Twain:  “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.  Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquaired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Read this book many years ago.  Don’t remember it anymore.  Just know that I really liked his writing.  I would have loved to travel as you have done.  What Mark Twain said about other people/cultures surely holds true of religions as well.

    • Elaine, thanks so much for following my blog. It’s fun to share the travels and the reading. You can likely find this book in a used book store & will enjoy it again. I’ve tried to learn from him about making friends within the new cultures I visit. I like seeing the news from other perspectives, too, and have Australia Broadcasting Company (ABC) and BBC on my Favorites. Thanks again.
